Chapter 10: The Family as an Organization

After selling everything they could sell, the family gathers to go over things and to plan. “And without any signal the family gathered by the truck, and the congress, the family government, went into session”.

What I find particularly interesting is the order in which people take turn to talk, each with a particular position and a role in the family, even sometimes if it is just an honorary one, like for Grandpa. It is literaly a family circle, with its members taking their place in the circle, with rituals.

And when Casy, the ex-preacher, asks to go to California with them, he will stay behind the house, waiting for the family to deliberate  his case, until he is called by Tom. He knows then that he is admitted to the family.
